TEXT 1
The Frog Prince
One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and
went out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to a cool
spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest
a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favorite plaything; and she was always tossing it up
into the air, and catching it again as it fell.
After a time she threw it up so high that she missed catching it as it
fell; and the ball bounded away, and rolled along on the ground, until at
last it fell down into the spring. The princess looked into the spring after
her ball, but it was very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of
it. She began to cry and said ,”Alas!
If I could only get my ball again, I would give all my fine clothes
and jewels, and everything that I have in the world.”
While she was speaking, a frog put its head out of the water, and
said, “Princess, why do you weep so bitterly?” “Alas!” Said she, ´what can
you do for me, you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring.”
The frog said,” I do not want your pearls, and jewels, and fine clothes; but
if you will love me, and let me live with you and eat off your golden plate,
and slept your bed, I will bring you your ball again.”

TEXT 3
I think my first trip to New Zealand was the best
experience of my life . I met quite a lot of nice people there. I made
acquaintance with Jenny, Harry, Rexi, and Bryan. They introduced me to their
families. We had barbeque times in Rexi’s and Joseph’s houses. Joseph and
Jenny are brother and sister while Rexi and Bryan are twins.
You can find sheep almost
everywhere in New Zealand. The tranquil meadow where the sheep graze always
appears in my mind every time I go to sleep. Jenny’s father has a lot of
sheep and he showed me his wool cutting machine, which he uses to collect the
sheep’s fur before processing it into wool thread.
For some people touring
is a relaxing experience. Yet, for me it is completely the opposite. I had to
spend time more than 24 hours in the same clothes with greasy hair and 3
hours of sleep. I would rather have travelled
from Auckland to Milford Sound in
easier way. We could have spent a night or so in a hotel, not in our
vehicle. However, having a bunch of friends along the way perked me up. It
makes me want to come back to New Zealand again.

TEXT 5
Diazinon and Dursban should be Banned
Diazinon and
dursband are chemicals used in lawns, gardens, agricultural crops and
livestock as an insecticide or nematocide (for worms). They are banned for
several good reasons.
Firstly, they
cause nausea, dizziness, burning sensations, headaches, blurred visions,
stomach and muscle cramps, twitching, diarrhea, aching joints, disorientation
and an inability to concentrate.
Secondly,
these chemicals cause human and animal birth defects in many areas of the
human body, including the brain, nervous system, teeth, eyes, ears, nipples,
and genitals. They can also cause profound growth and mental retardatation
when pregnant mothers are exposed. This may affect on lower birth weights of
infants if mothers are exposed before and during pregnancy, and this is
associated with lower IQs.
Finally,
residues, of course, are on some foods-up to 14 days on lettuce, for example-
and the chemical also seeps into the nearby water.
Therefore, the
government must be urged to keep the safety factor of pesticides paramount in
their thinking. Children are so much more sensitive than adults to the toxic
effects of chemicals.

Vegetarianism
is the voluntary abstinence from eating meat. It is the practice of a diet
that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, fish or crustacea.
Vegetarians refrain from eating meat
for various reasons, including religious, health and ethical ones.
Vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy products are categorized as lacto-ovo
vegetarians. Strict vegans do not consume any kind of animal derived product.
Vegetarianism is recommended as a
dietary therapy for a variety of conditions, including heart disease, high
cholesterol, type-2 diabetes and stroke. Vegetarianism is a major dietary
therapy in
an alternative treatment of cancer. Other conditions treated with a dietary therapy of vegetarianism include obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, allergies, asthma, environmental illness, hypertension, etc.
Vegetarianism in America received a lot
of interest during the last half of the nineteenth century and the beginning
of the twentieth century. The growing health consciousness of Americans is
probably the major reason for the surge in interest in vegetarianism.
Nutrition experts have built up convincing evidence that there are major
problems with the conventional American diet, which is
centered around meat products. They are high in cholesterol and saturated fat, but low in fiber. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes, which cause 68% of all deaths in America, are all believed to be influenced by this diet.

TEXT 7
Learning
English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure
with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to
your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the
idea why we use songs in language learning.
Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory. Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample. Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and probably many other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference. In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution. Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture. From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning English can be enjoyable and fun. |

TEXT 8
In many hilly areas of Scotland there once were large forests.
Over the years the forests became smaller. People cut down the trees to use
the wood for heating or building. They used the land for farming. After a
while the land was not good for farming. It became rocky because the earth
was washed away by the train. There were no trees to hold the earth in place.
Now the Scottish government is planting new trees. These new forests look
nice and green. They will also help improve the earth to the future.
Large forests are important to us in many ways. They
give us wood for building and heating. They are a home for many kinds of
plants and animals. And for many city people, forest is a
place to go for vacation. People can earn about nature there. They can breath
fresh air and sleep in quite place. But there is one more reason why forests
are important for everyone. The leaves
on the trees in a forest help clean the air. Dirty air is a problem in many
part of the world. Without forests this problem might be much worse. With all

TEXT 10
Anybody who is over the age of six
knows that there is nowhere safe for skateboarders to skate. This prevents
young people from enjoying an active, energetic and adventurous pastime.
Just watch a local street for a
short while and note the steady stream of skaters speeding up and down the
footpaths. Toddlers can be trampled on and old ladies can be knocked down as
they struggle home carrying their cat food from supermarkets.
Skateboarding is a serious sport
that improves young people’s health. It increases fitness, improves balance
and strengthens the joints in knees and ankles. Although it appears to be a
solo sport, when groups practice together and compete to perform stunts or
runs they form firm friendships.
Young people should be prevented
from becoming overweight couch potatoes. If they are actively involved in
skating, they do not smoke, take drugs or break laws for fun.
Kids will always seek thrills and
excitement. They need to practice their 180s, 360s and Ollie’s free from
restrictions. We must build skate parks in the suburbs so that streets are
safe for small children and senior citizens and skaters have spaces where
they can race, chase, speed, and soar towards the sun.
